Conventional Or studio Gyms
The difference…
I have worked in both the conventional gym and the studio/box facility. Both provide a lot for a person looking to advance themselves in health, wellness and fitness.
However, there are two big differences in these setups.
So let's talk about it...
Let's start with the studio/box facility because I want to spend more time talking about the conventional gym.
The studio/box setup is pretty straight forward. This facility is designed in a group training style. You usually are doing the same workout as the ones around you.
Hopefully, in this environment you have a specific person programming for all of the members with certain goals in mind for the group as a whole.
Take Crossfit boxes, for example, ideally someone is programming in cycles to help develop specific skills like cleans or snatches. Olympic lifts if you will.
Since this is the structure of most of these facilities this explains the higher pricing in comparison to the conventional gym.
A couple things to consider when deciding to make a studio/box your community:
Is there programming thoroughly thought through with end goals in mind?
After trying a class, did you enjoy the coaching style?
After trying a class, was the community encouraging and inviting?
Did the class leave you wanting more?
Do you feel like the class gave you everything for the cost?
Now onto the conventional gym:
Sometimes the conventional gym is known as a globo, commercial or budget friendly gyms.
These spaces are usually a lower price point, offer more equipment and more space. The idea with these spaces is that it wants to be a place of many different workout styles.
In these environments, you may see bodybuilders working out next to previous athletes. Basically the picture that I am trying to paint for you is that all different training styles in one location. Each person, potentially, has different goals for their membership.
Within the conventional gym setting there tends to be more people within one space. In an environment like this it can be overwhelming.
Usually someone new to fitness finds themselves in one of these settings because it is easy without a ton of commitment. But again it can be overwhelming.
In a conventional gym setting there are a ton of options available to a person. This includes group classes, small group classes, private training, self led workouts and so much more. So how does one navigate this situation?
Simple answer: not well.
I have seen over the years many people drop off and never come back into the gym. There is a huge gap in accountability, especially for a new person in fitness. This is hard as a fitness professional to see.
You never want to see someone fall off and never come back. Everyone, deep down, has the potential to be great in this type of environment. But the reason that they do not is, honestly, because it is too EXPENSIVE.
What I mean by expensive is that in order to achieve a high level of accountability a person needs to hire a trainer or coach. However, the cost is very unrealistic for most people for a significant amount of time.
In most conventional gyms, there is no alternative for those that can not afford a coach. With the lack of an alternative a person is left to their own devices. Typically, these devices increase the potential of injury or lack of consistency.
Similar to the studio/box facility, some questions for you to consider:
Do I have a program that I can follow in this space?
What ways can I keep myself accountable here?
Is a fitness coach an option for my budget?
Are there other programs within this facility that I feel like I could join?
All of the reasons above is exactly why I created EC Signature. As amazing it would be to reach those that are in small studios or boxes, that is not my target. My target is for those that are part of a conventional, globo, commercial or budget friendly gyms.
It was created to give all the value or a trainer without having a trainer standing with you in physical person. However, all workouts come with video demonstrations and regular check ins. Both these things were major components to create accountability and consistency.
Let me ask you this, have you ever wanted to know exactly what to do in the gym?
If the answer was yes, then this is for you! You need to check out this program. You need to get involved... don't wait any longer.
